Strengthening Families Program
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized 14 week parenting and family strengthening program for high-risk and regular families. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their children and learn more effective parenting skills.
The program offers a unique component here in Olathe. Pathway partners with another Olathe church, Christ the Servant, -and with government agencies- adult corrections and juvenile corrections-in hosting the training at the Commons. The teachers are from the government agencies as well as the churches. Pathway provides the space and hosts. The program begins with all eight families and volunteers sharing a meal together around a common table. This simple act of eating together begins to build bonds in the family. The role of Pathway is not only providing the space, but also providing table host. The table host is simply asked to be hospitable to the participating family and help facilitate a safe space for the family.
The SFP attempts to bring renewal and restoration to families in crisis while also trying to prevent future family problems; values Pathway embraces. SFP is part of our mission in serving the city. We believe this is an excellent way to live out our different S.T.O.R.I.E.S.
